15. B.C. «Turicum», Roman customs post on the Lindenhof. Fortified and described as a town since 10th century A.D. 1218 free imperial city. 1336 Rudolf Brun's Guild Constitution. Joined the Swiss Confederation in 1351. Increasing importance, especially since mayoralty of Hans Waldmann (end of 15th century). 1523 beginning of Reformation by Huldrych Zwingli. 19th century, during lifetime of Alfred Escher (died 1882), development into Switzerland's leading commercial and economic centre (machine and textile industries, banking, insurance and tourism).
Festivals and local customs
Sechseläuten, Zurich's spring festival, is usually held on the third Monday in April (children's parade on the Sunday). The main attractions are the parade of the guilds, dressed in historic costumes, through the centre of the city, and the burning of the ”Böögg”, symbolising the end of winter. The Böögg is a snowman made of cotton wood and stuffed with fireworks, which is set alight on Sechseläutenwiese at 6 p.m. on the dot. On the Monday evening the members of the various guilds visit each other in their respective guildhalls, bearing lanterns and playing music. 22/23 April 2001.
Knabenschiessen (boy's shooting contest), the oldest Zurich tradition, takes place on the second weekend in September. It consists of a shooting contest at the Albisgüetli for 12 to 17 year-old boys/girls and a colorful three-day fun-fair.
St. Nicholas Day (December 6) is not an official public holiday but is celebrated in some districts with a traditional ”Santa Claus” procession.
Fasnacht (Carnival; beginning of March) has a charm of its own too. Tireless ”Guggenmusiken” (carnival bands) play more loud than beautiful music in the streets. A big parade on Sunday and masked balls for the public show that gaiety and exuberance also have their place in Zurich.
The Züri Fäscht, is held once every three years at the beginning of July. From Friday to Sunday, the Old Town and the banks of the Lake of Zürich and the River Limmat are transformed into one huge fairground. Shopping
Here you will find stylish fashion shops with high quality goods (shoes, furs, accessories, porcelain, jewellery and watches), banks, confectioners and pavement cafés that tempt you to tarry and take the weight off your feet. The Bahnhofstrasse has its special charm at every season of the year: in spring, when the lime-trees' fragrance is in the air, in summer when the scene is enlivened by the many visitors from all over the world, in autumn when the window-dressings are particularly tempting and in winter when the street sparkles in the glitter of the Christmas illuminations. deutsch
Sechseläuten, das Zürcher Frühlingsfest, findet in der Regel am dritten Montag im April statt. Kostümierter Umzug der Kinder am Sonntag. Hauptattraktion sind der Umzug der Zünfte mit historischen Kostümen in der Innenstadt, das Verbrennen des «Böögg» (Schneemann aus Watte, mit Knallkörpern gefüllt, der den Winter symbolisiert) punkt sechs Uhr abends auf dem Sechseläuten-Platz und die gegenseitigen nächtlichen Besuche der Zünfte mit Laternen und Musik in ihren Zunftstuben. 22./23. Der St.-Nikolaus-Tag (6. Dezember) ist zwar kein offizieller Feiertag, wird aber in einigen Quartieren mit traditionellen «Samichlaus»-Umzügen gefeiert.
Auch die Zürcher Fasnacht (Februar/Anfang März) hat ihren eigenen Reiz. Nimmermüde «Guggenmusiken» ziehen durch die Strassen und geben ihre grausig-schönen Ständchen zum besten. Ein grosser Umzug am Sonntag und öffentliche Maskenbälle beweisen, dass in Zürich auch Fröhlichkeit und Ausgelassenheit ihren Platz haben.
Shopping In der Altstadt, links der Limmat (Rennweg, Strehlgasse, Augustinergasse, St. Peterhofstatt, Münsterhof), finden Sie ebenfalls zahlreiche kleinere Boutiquen, Antiquitätengeschäfte, Bars und Cafeterias.
Eine weitere attraktive Einkaufsstrasse ist das rechtsufrige Limmatquai mit den Zunfthäusern, den kuriosen Boutiquen und den vielen verheissungsvollen Seitengässchen. Wenn Sie Lust haben, beenden Sie Ihre Tour vielleicht mit einem Bummel durch die Altstadt rechts der Limmat, im Oberdorf oder im Niederdorf.
Zu einem beliebten Einkaufsgebiet hat sich auch die Region Löwenstrasse mit der angrenzenden Bahnhofpassage «Shopville» entwickelt.
Die südländisch anmutende Langstrasse bietet zu bescheideneren Preisen ebenfalls alles, was das Herz begehrt.
Der einzigartige, fussgängerfreundliche Marktplatz Oerlikon erspart dank seinem breiten Angebot manchem Messebesucher und Hotelgast die Fahrt in die City.
The main shopping area is concentrated within a square kilometre in the heart of the city, making it ideal for pedestrians. The best place to begin a shopping expedition is at the Main Railway Station. Stroll through the famous Bahnhofstrasse – one of Europe's finest shopping streets – towards Paradeplatz and the lake.
In the Old Town, to the left of the Limmat (Rennweg, Strehlgasse, Augustinerhof), you will also find many smaller boutiques, antique shops, bars and cafeterias.
Another attractive shopping street is the Limmatquai, on the right-hand side of the river, with its guild houses, curious boutiques and many promising-looking side streets. If you still feel like walking, you can finish your tour with a stroll through the Old Town on the right bank of the Limmat (Oberdorf and Niederdorf).
The Löwenstrasse area with the neighbouring Bahnhofstrasse which is called ”Shopville” has developed into a popular shopping district too.
The unique pedestrian market square, Marktplatz Oerlikon (on the way to the airport), saves many a fair visitor and hotel guest the trip into the city centre thanks to its wide range of goods.
LETZIPARK, the only shopping centre in the city, is located in Zürich-Altstetten. Its 66 shops will provide you with all your everyday needs. Convenient to reach by tram no 2 and bus nos. 31,80 and 89. Over 1500 FREE parking spaces. Open from Mon–Fri, 9 am–8 pm, Sat, 8 am–4 pm.
