Glarnerland, het vakantie- en wandelgebied bij uitstek

Algemene informatie
Het Glamerland is een diepuitgesneden dal in het zuidoosten van Zwitserland, haIverwege tussen Zürich en Graubünden gelegen. Ideaal voor een korte pauze of enkele dagen vakantie op een van de zonneterrassen tegenover gletsjers en imposante rotspartijen. Onze fjordenachtige meren, Walensee en Klöntalersee, nodigen uit tot wandelen, kamperen en zeilen.

Glarus is een van de oudste kantons (provincies) van Zwitserland en kent nog de "Landsgemeinde", de oervorm van de democratie. Op de eerste zondag van mei komen de kiesgerechtigde vrouwen en mannen in Glarus, de hoofdstad, bijeen om na discussie vast te stellen welke wetten en voorstellen door de regering veranderd dienen te worden.

In het Glamerland neemt de industrie eveneens een belangrijke plaats in. Meer dan 200 j aar levert de Linth de energievoorziening (de zgn. witte steenkool). Vroeger voor de spinnerijen, weverijen en ververijen, welke produkten over de hele wereId geexporteerd werden. Nu nog getuigen de fabrieken hiervan en in het Landesmuseum in Näfels kan men de hele geschiedenis van de textielindustrie bekijken.

Het kanton Glarus werd wereldberoemd mede door de "Ziger", een harde, lang houdbare kruidenkaas, die men o.a. kan raspen, en alleen hier wordt gemaakt. Op de steile alpenhellingen wordt de landbouw uitgeoefend en melkvee gehouden. Van deze melk worden ook andere voortreffelijke kazen geproduceerd. Een andere culinaire specialiteit is de "Glarner Pastete", een luchtig bladerdeeggebak gevuld met gedroogde pruimen of amandelen, dat U zeker niet mag missen. Met de "Landsgemeinde" eten alle Glarner hun specialiteit: kalfsworst met aardappelpuree. Dat moet U zeker in een van onze restaurants gegeten hebben.

Wandelen / mountainbaike / watersport en bergklimmen
Het is de moeite waard om het Glarnerland, een wandel- en sprookjesland, te ontdekken. Meer dan 300 km wandelpaden, varierend van eenvoudig en vlak tot zeer moeilijk en urenlang, zijn goed aangegeven. Mountainbikeroutes voor geoefenden staan in sterk kontrast met de 40 km lange autovrije fietsweg die, langs de rivier, van Linthal (650 m) naar Rapperswil aan het meer van Zürich loopt.
De Walensee met het aan de noordoever gelegen Quinten nodigt uit tot zeilen en zwemmen. Dit is het enige dorp in Zwitserland, dat men alleen te voet of per boot kan bereiken.
De steile rotswanden van de Glärnisch worden in de Klöntalersee (800 m) weerspiegeld en de Glamer kunnen hier zowat voor hun deur vissen, roeien, zwemmen, of hun tent op een camping opzetten.

De bergen van het Glarnerland lenen zich uitstekend voor echte bergsport: bergklimmen en tochten in het hooggebergte. Er zijn bv. klimwanden in Braunwald, verschillende oefengebieden (de "Klettergarten") en de hooggebergtetochten via SAC-berghutten naar de Schilt, Glärnisch of Tödi (de hoogste berg van het Glarnerland (3612 m ).

Voor wie niet graag naar boven loopt zijn er de stoeltjes- en gondelliften, die U op een comfortabele manier naar de alpen boven Elm, Schwanden, Braunwald en Kerenzerberg vervoeren. In een bergrestaurant genieten van het uitzicht en de zon en u beleeft Uw mooiste vakantie in de Glarner bergen. Op de Kerenzenberg kunt U tevens de langste rodelbaan van Zwitserland uittesten.

Vakantie voor het hele gezin in het Glarnerland
Rodelen in de zomer en sleeen in de winter op de Kerenzerberg, de dwerg Bartli ontdekken in Braunwald, het Landesmuseum in Näfels bezoeken, voor het hele gezin fietsen huren in Linthal of een bezoek brengen aan de Landesplattenberg. Zeer zeker de moeite waard is een bezoek aan de alpenstad Glarus met zijn uitnodigende winkels. Overdekte zwembaden vindt U in Näfels en in Filzbach op de Kerenzerberg ; openluchtbaden in Schwanden, Glarus, Netstal en Näfels.

The holiday and rambling area without parallel
Area 685 km2, Population 39200; Max. Alt. 3614 m (Tödi), Min. Alt. 414 m (Linth River at Bilten); Length: 40 km, Width: 25 km, two-thirds of the area is productive, although a large part of it is alpine pasturage.

Glarnerland lies right in the heart of Switzerland, just 70 km from Zurich-Airport. In the north it is bordered by bluey-green waters of the Lake of Walenstadt (Walensee), in the south by the ice capped Mount Tödi. The south eastern border is formed by the wild Tschingelhörner mountains and the western one by Klöntalersee, in which the reflection of the mountains can be seen.

Hardly anywhere else is such an array of different types of stunning landscape to be seen in such close proximity: romantic mountain lakes, sparkling rivers, streams and rivulets - a paradise away from the hustle and bustle of the holiday resorts. The exquisite Glarner cuisine make the Glarnerland an ideal holiday area all the year round.

Footpaths crisscross the whole area. Cable railways take the strain out of the tiring uphill stretches and quickly take you to the marvellous unspoilt world of peace and quiet up in the mountains.

Right in the middle of one of the oldest nature reserves in Europe where an experienced eye can observe many a creature in its natural environment, lies the Mettmenalp - an outstanding area for climbers. Trained mountain guides give instructions in climbing and are always ready to take out small groups of climbers - and to risk the dangerous parts with you.

In the 'Freuler Palace' at Näfels is the historical museum of the canton of Glarus located. Very impressive are the following sections: history of the canton of Glarus, the historical banner, glass paintings, portraits, ecclesiastial art, mercenaries hired in foreign services, as well as the famous glaronese textile printing.

Glarus
Population 5600. At the foot of the 2328 m high Vorderglärnisch is the capital to the canton of the same name. Every year at the first sunday in May here the Glarner Landsgemeinde (the canton's open-air assembly) takes place.

Elm
Altitude 1000 m, population 850. Community in the Sernf- or Kleintal (minor valley) with undistorted village character. Tourist area (summer and winter sports). Elm is an excellent skiing area which meets all expectations. Elm is hometown of Olympic gold medal winner and World Champion Vreni Schneider (woman alpine skiing). Elm also is famous for its Martinsloch, a hole through the rocky mountain through which sun shines twice a year (on March 12/13 and October 1/2) spotlighting the church tower before the actual sunrise. At the nearby Kärpf wild life preserve animals, such as deer, ibexes and golden eagles can be watched. In the immediate vicinity of the famous alpine mineral springs at Elm is the Raminerbach. lt only takes the unique view of the wild mountains to make one forget about the difficulties of the climb.

Braunwald
Altitude 1300 m, population 500. The village lies high above the valley, it is a spa and a tourist area (winter and summer sports). Braunwald is the only health resort free from Automobil traffic in the north-eastern part of Switzerland. lt therefore enjoys an international reputation. The finicular railway brings visitors up from Linthal. From Braunwald you will enjoy an impressive view over the alps. Excellently managed hotels, boarding-houses, comfortable chalets and Appartements welcome our guests. Braunwald attracts sportsmen, mountaineers as weil as those who search rest and recreation. lt is the ideal holiday resort for the hole family. In summer the visitor will find more than 30 miles of well-kept trails; indoor swimming-pool, tennis, walking and mountaineering amidst the lovely alpine flora.

Braunwald is also famous for its alpine rose gardens and annual music Festivals. In winter about 15 miles of well-kept mountain trails, toboggan-slides, natural curling- and skating-rinks invite for out-door activities. Swiss ski-school for beginners and advanced skiers, special children's classes. Chair and cabin lifts, skilifts and cable-cars bring the skiers to the slopes suited to every taste. Those who spend their holiday at Braunwald win new vigour for the strenuous everyday life.

Kerenzerberg
Three communities Mühlehorn, Obstalden and Filzbach form the district Kerenzerberg. Mühlehorn lies at the shore of Lake of Walenstadt (Walensee), on the expressway and the major railway systems. Obstalden lies high above the Walensee, its famous church was built around 1300. Filzbach spa and tourist area above the Walensee is only 45 minutes from Zurich by car. In winter it should be quite a discovery for many skiers. In summer invite hiking tours at the foot of the Mürtschenstock to the romantic mountain lakes Talalp and Spannegg.
